In the early 18th century, Nuremberg merchant J. C. Volkamer turned his obsession with citrus fruits into one of the most extravagant botanical works of the era. Commissioning 256 copperplate engravings of 170 varieties of citrons, lemons, and bitter oranges—often depicted life-size—he presented them in fantastical scenes where fruit hangs like celestial bodies over landscapes of Italy, Nuremberg, and beyond.
Published in two volumes beginning in 1708, The Nuremberg Hesperides combined meticulous horticultural instruction—on orangeries, glasshouses, and cultivation—with poetic imagery that blended science and art. Grapefruits arch across Bologna courtyards, pineapples sprout from South American towns, and each plate celebrates both the fruit and the world it inhabits.
This new edition draws on recently discovered hand-colored volumes from Fürth’s municipal archive, along with 56 additional illustrations intended for a third volume, offering a rare glimpse into Volkamer’s visionary fusion of botanical study and surreal imagination.
