This book offers an introduction to the groundbreaking art of Niki de Saint Phalle (1930–2002), a central figure in the Nouveau Réalisme movement of 1960s Paris.
Early Assemblages – She replaced traditional materials with everyday objects like household items, machine parts, and toys, connecting art directly to life.
Shooting Paintings (Tirs) – Beginning in 1961, she staged performances where reliefs made of plaster and found objects were shot with bullets, creating dynamic, destructive artworks in locations from Paris to Malibu.
Sculptures of the Female Form – Works such as Pink Birth (1964) and Hon En Kathedral (1966) explored themes of motherhood, femininity, and mortality. Her famous Nana sculptures celebrated women, often inspired by her friends and family.
Expanded Practice – Beyond sculpture, she created films (Daddy, 1973), artist’s books (AIDS: You Can’t Catch it Holding Hands, 1987), and monumental projects like the Tarot Garden, a sculpture park inspired by the 22 Major Arcana cards.
