aldis Muktupāvels (1958) - doctor of arts sciences (Ph.D.), professor at the University of Latvia, and a corresponding member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences. Areas of expertise cover issues relating to Latvian and Baltic traditional and contemporary musical culture: historical and social aspects, traditions and change, semantic interpretation of soundscapes, musical instruments, culture and identity.
A key figure in the folklore movement in Latvia and a contributor to the revival of traditional musical instruments as well as the preservation and popularization of cultural heritage in Latvia and abroad. A composer of choral, instrumental and film music.
This monograph has received the Latvian Academy of Sciences award as one of the top achievements in Latvian science in 2017.
